The Slinky And Its History
Since the introduction of the industrial revolution, we have used springs to accomplish jobs that happen to be crucial but quite boring. When working in the long years of World War II, though, a mechanical engineer holding a job at a Philadelphia shipyard noticed a spring moving in a very peculiar way. That mechanical engineer was named Richard James, and he observed spring get knocked down from a shelf and end up on the floor. The bit that warranted his attention was the manner in which the spring, in lieu of just landing on the floor, “stepped” in a progression of arcs from a shelf, to a pile of books, down to a tabletop, and finally to the floor, where it gathered itself and stood upright.
Stimulated by this particularly animated spring, James experimented with several kinds of steel and numerous tensions, and finally designed a spring that would “walk” down a ramp. James’ wife Betty dubbed the new toy Slinky upon looking the word up in a dictionary and realizing that it was an effective description.
In 1945, the James’ were given permission to build an inclined plane inside the toy department of Gimbles’ department store in Philadelphia. Right after one or two demonstrations, the shoppers were plainly pleased, and James quickly went through his existing inventory of 400 Slinkies in about ninety minutes. Those original Slinkies had a price tag of $1, and the price has not increased substantially in about three generations. Apparently, Betty James is behind this, as she was adamant that lower income families might be able to buy this product in addition to more affluent ones. Slinky continued to be a popular toy for at least 60 years, and has sold more than 30 million units in the course of that time. Its functions have not been restricted to playrooms, though. College professors have used Slinkies to describe the qualities of waves in their classrooms. Soldiers sometimes made use of them during the Vietnam War as radio antennas, and NASA has made use of them for zero-gravity science experiments on the space shuttle. In 2003, the Toy Industry Association accepted the Slinky to its “Century of Toys List”. Funny enough, the Slinky has grown to be such a social treasure that the US Postal Service released a Slinky postage stamp in 1999.
Even with its numerous awards and achievements, the Slinky is still affordably priced and widely available. The toy is now made from either metal or plastic, and both editions may be bought in nearly any toy store as well as most big box stores as well as online for just under $6.
