Laptop shutting down by itself?

I went to office depot about my laptop. They said i had malware even tho I had mcafee protection on it. Their price was expensive so I just had my brother clear everything on it so it could start like brand new. Then I put the mcafee protection back on. It was good for a month but now I'm getting the same problem. It keeps shutting down while I'm using it.
What's wrong? Could it be the battery? I had the habit of keeping the adapter in for too long when I first got this laptop so now the battery goes out quick if I don't have it plugged in.
I only have mcafee total protection as my antivirus program.
I've already tried replacing my adapter, but I have not tried replacing the battery.
My laptop does heat up easily. I keep it over a solid surface but not a fan.

Do you have multiple antivirus programs on your laptop? Is the fan overheating?

Edit: What I do is i prop my laptop up with a thick book, exposing the area the fan is. The fan needs to ventilate or the hot air trapped there is gonna cause the computer to overheat. Try that.

I'm talking about the fan that's in your laptop.
