Two aluminium strips, each 75mm wide and 5mm thick, are riveted together to form a continuous length. The joint is made using six rivets each 5mm in diameter. The ultimate shear strength (USS) of the rivet material is 70 MN/m2 and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of the aluminium is 30 MN/m2. If the Maximum tensile force applied to the continuous strip is 1.875 KN determine the factor of safety:
a) for the rivets
b) for the aluminium

First, find the stress in the rivets. To simplify, you can add up the cross sectional area of all the rivets, and divide the load among them to find shear stress. Divide the ultimate shear stress by the shear stress, and you have your factor of safety.
Likewise, find the cross sectional area of the plate at its narrowest point by subtracting the holes from the rivets, and divide the load over the area to find the stress. Divide the ultimate stress by your calculated stress, and again you have your factor of safety.
To be more accurate, you would look at the stress concentration factor for such a hole, and multiply this by the calculated tensile stress to find a better estimate of the maximum stress.
